Auricular Acupuncture Lessens Nausea & Vomiting In Chemotherapy Patients

Auricular acupuncture is a non-invasive treatment that utilises hundreds of areas of the ear.

Needles or small studs are attached to acupuncture points on the patients ear.

This type of therapy is most commonly known for alleviating symptoms caused by addictive behaviour.

However, various studies are using this and traditional acupuncture to address chronic pain and side effects of chemotherapy.

The Research

This latest research published in the Complementary Therapies In Clinical Practice journal found auricular acupuncture alleviated nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients after receiving chemotherapy.

The 48 participants were split into two groups.

The control group were administered regular treatments while the experimental group were given the same treatment alongside five days of auricular acupuncture.

The Result

Firstly, women who received auricular acupuncture noted a decrease in “the number and intensity of nausea and vomiting”.

This was found to be true in both the acute and delayed phases.”

This was “significantly lower” than the reactions by the group without auricular acupuncuture.

Secondly, the encouraging results suggest that this treatment is a viable option that should be offered to those undergoing chemotherapy.

It’s a low-cost form of pain management.

Finally, researchers added that nurses should be utilising auricular acupuncture in tandem with other protocols as a “non drug, cost effective, non-invasive approach.”

The implications

Firstly, the advantage of auricular acupuncture is it enables people to take control of their own pain management.

It’s a simple practice that I fully endorse and often use in my clinic.
