New research into the effect of alcohol highlights an increase in the type of cancer directly caused by it’s consumption.
For many years there has been an association between the two, for example Liver cancer.
However this newest findings show alcohol can cause cancer in seven different sites.
The Research
The researchers compiled results from ten years of research.
They analysed data from comprehensive reviews over the last 10 years by the World Cancer Research Fund, American Institute for Cancer Research and others.
Findings from the meta-study, published in the Addiction journal, show a direct link between drinking alcohol and the probability of getting cancer in the following sites:
- The oropharynx
- Larynx
- Oesophagus
- Liver
- Colon
- Rectum
- Female breast
How Can Alcohol Lead To Cancer?
When alcohol is consumed, the yeast interacts with the bad bacteria in the body, often promoting the growth of disease-causing Candida albicans in the gut.
Alcohol also shows to cause significant damage to DNA, as it breaks down into a toxin that interferes with a cell’s ability to mend itself.
The estimates suggest that alcohol-attributable cancers at these sites make up 5.8% of all cancer deaths world-wide.
They added that “The highest risks are associated with the heaviest drinking.
However, a large burden is felt by drinkers with low to moderate alcohol use, due to the distribution of drinking in the population.”
There Is No Safe Guideline
Binge drinkers are most commonly targeted in the media as being more unhealthy.
However the conclusion from the research implies that it’s not the case.
The research suggests there is no proof that moderate use can prevent disease.
